CongressGeneral Secretary in-charge of Assam and former Uttarakhand Chief MinisterHarish Rawat on Thursday announced his resignation taking moral responsibilityof the party's poor show in the north-eastern state in the recently-concludedLok Sabha polls.

Announcinghis resignation, Rawat said, "As the in-charge of party affairs in Assam, I amresponsible for the below-par performance of the Congress in the parliamentary pollsand this decided to step down from the post."

Rawatin a tweet said, "We the office bearers of the Congress are responsible for theparty's defeat and organizational failure. I am responsible for thebelow-expected result of the party in Assam as in-charge of the state."

Healso said that for the people like him, posts were not important but a leaderlike Gandhi who inspired the workers should continue to lead the party.

Rawatalso stated that if the leadership remains in his hand, it is possible that hecould lead the party to victory in 2022 assembly elections in the states andalso in 2024 Lok Sabha elections to defeat the BJP and Narendra Modi and thatis the reason that all democratic forces and Congress workers want to see RahulGandhi as Congress President.

Rawat'sresignation comes after Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi announces his resignationon Wednesday.
