Guwahati city is witnessing several ongoing projects. One such project is the six-lane upcoming bridge connecting Bharalumukh with North Guwahati's Gauripur. Suspecting possibility of cutting down of numerous trees on the south bank of the river Brahmaputra for the project, a human chain programme was organised in front of Sankardev Park in Bharalumukh on Sunday morning. Hundreds of Guwahatian took part in the programme.
The human chain programme was organised to raise voice on the issue to save trees, park and the riverfront from destruction in the name of development activities. "There is a possibility of cutting down over 250 trees for the project and it will affect the ecological balance in the city," said a protester. They also demanded to appoint an expert committee to bring out a possible solution to save trees.
It may be mentioned here that the 1600 metre bridge, once built, will reduce travel time from the south bank to north bank Brahmaputra from 90 minutes to mere 15 minutes. The bridge will also play a pivotal role in reducing traffic congestion.
