In an effort to boost security and surveillance mechanism in Guwahati, the State Government has approved installation of 4,000 close circuit television (CCTV) cameras in strategic locations all over the city.
Of the 4,000 cameras, around 800 would be used to monitor vehicular traffic and also to effectively track down hit-and-run cases and road mishaps.
The initiative is a part of the Smart City project which will be carried through by Guwahati Smart City Limited. The total proposed cost of the Guwahati Smart City project is predicted to be around Rs 2,296 crore, including Rs 1,579 crore(approx) in area-based development cost and Rs 622 crore (approx) in pan city cost.
Presently, the city has only around 350 CCTV cameras, including the ones that are supported by private parties. Post installation of 4,000 cameras, the city will be rated among cities with the highest density of CCTV cameras, keeping in mind its size and population.
The installation process will be under the direct supervision of Assam Police as the issue is directly related to the welfare and security of the Guwahati residents.
