Guwahati Couple Donates Rs. 25L to BBCI for Cancer Research

A couple of Hatigarh Chariali in Guwahati, S.N. Phukan and Deepika Phukan has instituted the 'Deepika Phukan Oncology Research Grant Award of Dr. B.Barooah Cancer Institute' (BBCI) to promote research on cancer.

According to a press release, the award of rupees one lakh will be given each year for 3 consecutive years to young promising scholars for research in the field of Oncology. Researchers will be selected every three years for the award.

Deepika Phukan, who is a long term breast cancer survivor and former Professor of St. Mary's College, Shillong has contributed immensely to the field of education.  Similarly, S.N. Phukan also played a significant role for the development of the power sector in the North-East in his capacity as former Chairman and Managing Director of North-Eastern Electric Power Corporation, Govt. of India.

The couple will donate a sum of Rs. 25lakhs to BBCI on October 2 which coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The BBCI authority is hopeful that the research outcome of the "Deepika Phukan Oncology Research Grant Award of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute" will be able to transform the lives of cancer patients as well as will help to improve current practice by oncologist and caregivers.
