With Vijayadashami being celebrated across Assam on Friday, the much waited Durgotsav has come to an end.
Vijayadashami is observed for different reasons and celebrated differently in various parts of the Indian subcontinent. In the southern, eastern and northeastern states of India, Vijayadashami marks the end of Durga Puja, remembering goddess Durga's victory over Mahishasura to help restore dharma. In the northern and western states, the festival is synonymously called Dussehra.
In Guwahati, the idol immersion, also known as visarjan, of Goddess Durga is taking place at Kachomari ghat in Fancy Bazaar and Pandu ghat and three other ghats – Saukuchi ghat, Chunsali ghat in Noonmati and Basistha ghat.
Before the idols are taken out for visarjan, married women put vermilion on Goddess Durga's forehead and feet after which they apply it on other married women present around them.
The tenth day of Navratri is also known as Dussehra is celebrated to remember Lord Ram's victory over Ravana, marking the triumph of good over evil.
