The Gauhati University postgraduate students' union (PGSU) election is scheduled to be held on September 24. Counting of ballots will take place on September 25.
The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) swept the PGSUpolls with a thumping majority last year. The three other parties – NationalStudents' Union of India (NSUI), Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS) and AkhilBharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) – face an uphill task in GU which is anAasu stronghold.
GU has been an AASU stronghold ever since the daysof the anti-foreigners' movement during 1979-1985.
