Differently-abled people in Assam boycott International Day of Persons with Disabilities

As the world celebrates  International Day of Persons with Disabilities, differently-abled people from across Assam boycott the day staging a protest in Dighalipukhuri over Sarbananda Sonowal led government's failure to fulfil their various long-pending demands.

The protest has been organised under the aegis of Pratibandhi Suraksha Sanstha, Asom (PSSA), an organisation fighting for the rights of differently-abled people of Assam, and have been supported by several other organisations.

On the same day on 2017, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu launched Deen Dayal Divyang Sahajya Yojna in Assam for the benefit of Divyangjan. Under the scheme, one-time ex gratia of five thousand rupees was slated to be given to each Divyang. However, none of the people registered under the scheme have received the amount, alleged a PSSA leader.

The protestors had been vocal about the failures of the government and has alleged that Sonowal has majorly failed to keep up with the expectations of the people his state.

It may be noted that PSSA had set December 01 as the deadline for the government to resolve their various demands. But, till today, the organisation has not been able to get any positive response towards their demands.
