Two people were killed after a powerful grenade blast hit Sivasagar's Demow town on Thursday evening. The blast occurred near a commercial establishment at about 5:30 PM last evening.
While one customer identified as Anup Gupta died on the spot, Kamal Agarwala, the owner of the shop declared dead at Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh. Though there was no claim for the incident, it is suspected that the attack was carried out by the militants affiliated to the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) or ULFA (I).
Meanwhile, upper Assam Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), RP Meena reached the spot last evening and started the investigation. It has come to light that ULFA had threatened Agarwal earlier.
ULFA (I), the banned terrorist outfit has stepped up its activities across Assam and was also warned of an "armed revolution" if the Centre goes ahead with its move to amend the Citizenship Act. Several youths have joined the Paresh Baruah-led group since last few months.
It should be noted that ULFA (I) is also said to be responsible for the November 1 killings of five people in Dhola. However, it has denied its involvement in the incident.
