Death sentence to Assam teacher Arnamai Bora’s murderer, life imprisonment to second culprit

On Wednesday, Additional District and Sessions Judge Court of in Hojai in central Assam has awarded death sentence to the prime accused in the sensational rape and murder of 58-year-old school teacher Arnamai Bora. The gruesome incident took place on May 31 last year at Jamunmukh in the district.

Though the prime accused Moinul Haque got 'death sentence', the Court pronounced 'life imprisonment' co-accused Salimuddin.

There were huge protests in the state over the gruesome incident of rape and murder of the school teacher. Following the incident, police started investigation and arrested two persons in connection with the incident. The two culprits arrested were identified as Moinul Hoque and Salimuddin for alleged involvement in the rape and killing incident.

The two were caught on June 1 last year, a day after the body of the teacher of Changjurai Ilashi Deuri Primary School near Jamunamukh was found near river Kopili. The teacher used to routinely cross the river by boat to commute to and from the school.

The two confessed to have followed Arnamai Bora for some time before waylaying her as she was returning from school on May 31 last year. The culprits confessed to police that after raping the teacher, the teacher was strangulated to death and later her body was thrown to Kopili River.

The Court's verdict was welcomed by various bodies in the state.

The area where the gruesome incident was occurred is an immigrant Muslim dominated area. The immigrant Muslim dominated areas in Assam have been regarded as 'not a safe area for woman' as incident of rape has frequently occurred in these areas.
