City bus commuters face problems in Guwahati

Commuters in Guwahati have faced severe problems for the second consecutive day on Wednesday due to scarcity of buses in the city. Hundreds of Guwahatians were stranded at the bus stoppages in various areas of the city like Beltola, Ganeshguri, Bhangagarh, Paltanbazar, Maligaon, Adabari etc.

Hundreds of city buses under different transport associations have called for shutdown against the new guidelines issued by the Kamrup (M) transport authority. The protest by the transport associations was intensified after the transport authority along with the Guwahati Traffic Police have launched crackdown on city buses for not following the new guidelines. During the crackdown, the authorities have seized 17 city buses.

Meanwhile, city bus associations in Guwahati have also alleged that without any official authority, the Home Guards have also fined the buses on several occasions.

As per the new guidelines issued by the Kamrup (M) transport authority, there should not be any handymen in the city buses. Also the buses will be allowed to stop at the stoppages only for 2 minutes and the city buses will have to display the photograph of the driver on the left of the windshield.
