BJP opted against CAB ordinance route

BJP opted against CAB ordinance route
Updated on:

The BJP Government has opted out of ordnance route to the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) even as four other bills were brought via ordinance on Tuesday.

Bowing to strong opposition from Assam and the North East, the Union Cabinet did not take up the bill for ordinance even as four other ordinances were issued.

There was some speculation as the BJP was insisting that they would bring in the bill if elected but the Cabinet remained silent on it.

The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha but not in Rajya Sabha where Narendra Modi led NDA government lacks majority.

The BJP top leadership are for the bill but Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma led a joint opposition to stip that in the Rajya Sabha. BJP's Chief Minister in Manipur N Biren Singh had also called for a review of the bill.

However, BJP chief Amit Shah had said in Lakhimpur on Sunday that the party will make the Citizenship Bill part of its manifesto for the next elections and pass it on return to power this year.
