Banarasi mekhala-chadar has once again grabbed the market in Guwahati and one businessman of Nagaon has been apprehended by locals while he was carrying banarasi clothes for sale in Fancy Bazaar in the name of Assam Silk.
The locals handedover the businessman Mahesh Kumar Poddar to Fancy Bazaar police. Police seizedhuge number of Banarasi clothes made in the replica of Assam Silk of Sualkuchi.
It may bementioned that in 2013, clothes revolution took place in Sualkuchi in Assam andburnt banarasi clothes worth lakhs of rupees. The weavers protested for theirrights. This time also the shops of silk mekhala-chadar in Fancy Bazaarare full of Banarasi mekhala-chador and traders sold banarasi clothes inthe name of Assam silk.
According to reports, there are still many banarasi clothes in the godowns of Guwahati worth around Rs. 50 crores. The market of banarasi clothes is controlled by a businessman of other states.
