Baghjan: Strong Protests Over Today’s Suicide Halts Capping Operations
Updated on

Continued protracted blockade by the locals today in Baghjan over the suicide of Sukleshwar Neog, one of the inmates of Baghjan Relief Camp who had lost his home and property to the fire, has brought the Baghjan Well no 5's capping operation to a complete halt.

As per sources, no one is allowed to come out of the jinxed well site.

The Baghjan people are determined to continue the blockade over the death of Neog, who is said to have taken the extreme step due to the alleged flippant outlook of OIL towards providing adequate compensation to the people affected by the Baghjan Fire.

Many locals of Baghjan are aggrieved and distraught over OIL's outlook towards the whole fiasco. They have staged protests earlier as well, but today's death seems to have given a new lease of life to their demands and agitations.

Well number 5 at Baghjan in Tinsukia district has been spewing gas uncontrollably since May 27 and it also caught fire on June 9, killing two firefighters of the OIL at the site.
