The traditional 'gamosa' of Assam will now have a distinguished identity as it has been approved for the geographical identity tag used to identify agricultural, natural or manufactured goods originating in the said area and should have a special quality or characteristic unique to the geographical indication.
The 124th Geographical Indications Journal has featuredGamosa with the GI tag. It said, "The gamosa is a traditional textile and asymbol of Assamese culture."
Instituteof Handicraft Development in Golaghat has made the application for the Gamosa.
Earlier,Assam's staple food 'Boka Chaul' (mud rice) has also received the GI tag by thegovernment of India's Intellectual Property India (IPI) body. This is the onlyproduct after Muga Silk, Joha rice and Tezpur litchi to have earned the GI tag.
The GI tags for both the Assam products will help boost the marketfor the two. It may be mentioned here, that the GI tag ensures that only theauthorized users get to use the product name.
