Assam Records Highest Road Accidents in NE Region

According to a report published by Assam Police, thestate had topped the northeastern region in the number of road accidents lastyear.

The report 'An analytical glimpse on road accidents inAssam' which was made available by news agency PTI, stated that a total of2,966 people were killed while 7,375 people were injured in 8,248 accidents inthe state last year.

The report also said that the state had ranked 16thin the country in the number of road accidents. According to the report, 30people were killed and 89 injured in every 100 accidents in the state.

The report further said that eight people were killedand 20 injured in an average in road accidents in the state every day lastyear.

Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam KuladharSaikia while talking on the issue said that lack of knowledge of road safetyrules is one of the main causes of accidents adding that majority of these werecaused due to negligent and callous driving.

The DGP further stated that many deaths and injuriesdue to road accidents could have been prevented.

According to the report, the occurrence of roadaccidents had risen by 15 percent in 2018 over the previous years whilefatalities had seen a spurt of six percent and injuries by 19 percent.

The report also says that 48 percent of the accidentshad occurred on the national highways while 26 percent of those had taken placeon the state highways and other roads.

However, road accidents had risen in 30 districts ofthe state whereas four districts had witnessed a dip.

On the other hand, 24 and 26 districts have seenrising cases of fatalities and injuries respectively.
