The Assam Government has decided to construct a new detention centre in the state to tackle the ever increasing problem of accommodating people, who have been declared or identified as illegal immigrants/foreigners, till further trials.
The new detention centre, to be constructed in Goalpara district, will be able to shelter around 3,000 immigrants at one time.
The centre will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 46 crore and will be provided by Government of India. The new detention site is expected to be complete within the next 12 months, Home Secretary L.S Changsan informed Pratidin Time.
Previously, people identified as foreigners were kept in jails and could only accommodate 8,888 people. Out of this total, 945 are people who have been identified by the Foreigner's Tribunal.
Surprisingly, there are 93,455 people declared as foreigners but have not been apprehended. The fate of these people still hangs in an unbalance.
