Traffic on the Jakhalabandha to Numaligarh national highway (NH 37) was suspended for light vehicles due to the lurking threat of floods in the part, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded.
The vehicles were stopped at various places between Dergaon to Bokakhat along the highway around 9:30 pm as a precautionary measure in view of the emerging situation in the Valley in the aftermath of heavy rains over the past several days, the officials said.
Hundreds of vehicles heading for Guwahati were left stranded at various places on the highway and local administration are making arrangements for the accommodation of the passengers for the night.
Meanwhile, the heavy vehicles passing through the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) area have been asked to keep their speed limit maximum to 40 km/hour so that no animal is hit while crossing the road.
