Assam flood moves West, havoc in lower Assam

Assam Flood has moved towards the west and created complete havoc in the lower Assam leaving a trail of gigantic destruction, the true picture of which would emerge in days to come.

The worst affected are Morigaon Barpeta and Dhubri districts while overall 30 districts of the state are affected.  But nothing can be compared to these districts.

In the Lahorighat, vast areas have been eroded while on the other side of the bank, the river Brahmaputra breached a crucial embankment submerging about 30 square kilometre area.

As most of the embankments of lower Assam are in perilous condition, more breaching of embankments is feared as in Dhubri.

In the Barpeta Town, the Barpeta Xatra is underwater as a river of Mora Nodi have inundated large parts of the Barpeta district.

At least 17 people have lost their lives due to the flood in Assam so far.  During this rainy season, two people have also died due to landslide in the State till date.

On the other hand, at least 44.96 lakh people of 4,620 villages in 32 districts of Assam are currently affected by the flood. Flood is now concentrating on Central and Lower Assam. This year, the flood had comparatively lesser damage in Upper Assam due to heavy rainfall in the Western Himalayan region. However, the heavy rainfall resulted in massive floods in Barpeta and Dhubri districts of Assam along with the State of Bihar.
