Assam Cong Asks ECI To Disqualify BJP’s Phanidhar Talukdar For Distributing Money To Voters

Assam Congress has demanded the disqualification of Bhawanipur BJP candidate for by-polls, Phanidhar Talukdar, for allegedly "indulging in bribery and corrupt" practices.

Senior Assam Congress leader Bobbeeta Sharma wrote to the Election Commission (EC) alleging that Talukdar had distributed money to the voters outside his residence in Bhawanipur.

"It has come to the notice of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee through media reports and video clippings that the BJP candidate for Bhawanipur constituency Sri Phani Talukdar is indulging in bribery and corrupt practices by distributing money to voters outside his residence in Bhawanipur," she wrote.

"This brazen act by the candidate is gross violation of the provision of section 123(1) of the Tepresentation of the People's Act 1951 as well as the election commission of India's model code of conduct," Sharma added.

"Under the circumstances Assam Pradesh Congress Committee requests you to urgently take prompt and immediate action against Sri Phani Talukdar, BJP candidate by disqualifying him from contesting the ensuing by-elections to be held on 30 October 2021," she further wrote.
