Assam's daughter Ashmita Chaliha won the Tata Open International Challenge Badminton Championship at Mumbai women's singles title on Sunday defeating Vrushali Gummadi by 21-16, 21-13 in the final held at NAS Sports Complex.
This was her second international title of the year after winning the Dubai International Challenge Title on November 18.
Earlier Saturday, the 19-year-old, Ashmita, had defeated Thailand's Chananchida Jucharoen in straight sets in the women's singles category. Ashmita made her way to the final with 21-19, 21-19 scoreline.
Born and brought up in Guwahati, Ashmita began playing badminton at the age of seven, and trained at the Assam Badminton Academy under Indonesian coach Edwin Iriawan and India's Suranjan Bhobora, she was trained by Pullela Gopichand for the nationals. Chaliha was part of the national junior team that competed at the 2017 World and Asian Junior Championships. She was selected to be part of the Indian team for the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.
