Bangladesh asked India to strengthen security for itsGuwahati mission after protesters defaced two signposts near the chancery amidanti-Citizenship (Amendment) Bill protests in Assam.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh said that aconvoy of the (Bangladesh) assistant high commissioner was also attacked in thecity on Thursday.
According to an official statement issued by theForeign Ministry in Dhaka, it said that the Indian high commissioner RivaGanguly Das met acting foreign secretary Kamrul Hasan at his office thisevening.
Hasan protested about the attack on the convoy of the(Bangladesh) assistant high commissioner and vandalization of the signposts (ofBangladesh Chancery in Guwahati)."
The statement further reads as, "He (Ahsan) requestedfor the protection of personnel and property of the Mission by the hostgovernment."
The Indian envoy assured Dhaka that the Indianauthorities were alerted of the incident and were directed to increase thesecurity of Bangladesh chancery and the assistant high commissioner's residencein the city.
Meanwhile, curfew was extended for 48 hours in severaldistricts of the state, internet services were snapped in 10 districts. Severaldistricts of the state saw violent protests despite repeated assurance fromAssam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Home Minister Amit Shah and PrimeMinister Narendra Modi that their rights and culture will be protected despitethe CAB under Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
Despite the heavy resistance in north-east PresidentRam Nath Kovind gave his assent for the Bill late Thursday night.
