AAMSU flexes muscle as pre-NRC protest erupt
Updated on

The All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) has started flexing its muscles as protests against alleged harassment by Border Police in the name of D-voters have erupted all over Assam, especially in western Assam and Lakhimpur.

These protest have been viewed as prelude to a major protest after the publication of NRC as the AAMSU have alleged that large number of the minority people have been kept out intentionally.

This was strongly rebutted by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Assam Chief Minister Sarbannda Sonowal and NRC Chief Coordinator Prateek Hajela. In fact, to ease the situation Union Home Minister asserted that no Indian citizen shall be harassed and non inclusion of name in NRC does not mean confinement in the detention centre.

All of them iterated that there would be ample opportunity to all the Indian citizens to prove their credentials. However AAMSU is not convinced and have threatened to intensify their opposition.

Meanwhile security measures have been tightened all over the state specially in the minority and AASMU dominated areas to thwart any untoward incidents.
