The high-level committee on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord held a meeting on Sunday. This is for the fifth time that the high-level committee is meeting after the panel was set up in July.

The committee received as many as 200 memorandums by September 20, 2019, on the very clause. It may be mentioned that the committee has made considerable progress on its mandate and currently working out the definition of who is an Assamese.

The committee is also examining suggestions that have poured in from stakeholders and different sections of the society regarding language and other issues.

The committee is scheduled to hold its next meeting on October 11.

The 14-member committee was formed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) with Justice (retd) Biplab Kumar Sarma, a former judge of the Gauhati High Court, as the chairman. The MHA has stipulated six months for the committee to submit its recommendations.
