Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar on Saturday revealed that 44 Rivers in Assam have been listed as the most polluted Rivers in India.
Javadekarrevealed the data in a question-answer session of the Lok Sabha which is basedon a data provided by Central and State Pollution Control Boards.
The dataalso reveals that 16 rivers in Assam were listed in the most polluted rivers inthe country list in the last one and a half years. The report also says thatthe rate of pollution of the Rivers and water bodies of Assam has also beenincreasing at a very high rate.
According tothe data, there are 351 polluted rivers in India.
The list of the polluted rivers in Assam includes Bharalu, Brahmaputra, Bhogdoi, Beki, Jiyabharali, Kolong, Kapili, Janji, Puthimari, Ronganadi among others.
However, theCentral Government is currently preparing a scheme to protect and cleanse therivers under Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. But it maybe mentioned that the River Brahmaputra has not been included under the scheme.
