On the occasion of birthday of Bhogeshwar Baruah, the first Assamese to win gold at an international sports event, Abhiruchi Sports day is being observed across Assam today.
This year's Abhiruchi Sports Day has been organized centrally in Guwahati with an annual mass jogging event starting at 6.15am from Chandmari flyover to Radha Govinda Barua Sports Complex.
The run is annually organised by Abhiruchi Sports Day Organising Committee. A number of school and college students took part in the event.
Along with Bhogeshwar Baruah, Manipur MLA and known Taekwondo player Y Hemchand Singh was also present taking part in the run.
On the occasion, Baruah said "I have felt left out of lot of things in India. I don't want the same fate for Hima Das. I wish the best for her".
September 3 in Assam is celebrated to mark the life of Bhogeshwar Baruah, one of the first Assamese to win gold at an international event, winning a medal at the 1966 Asian Games. He was the winner of the gold medal in an 800-metre running event of the 1966 Asiad.
