24-hour ‘chakka bandh’ cripples normal life across Assam

The 24-hour All India Transport Strike (Chaka Bandh) against the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill has crippled normal life across the country and Assam.

The most affected was Kalgasia in Barpeta district where commercial establishments were also shut down along with the normal transport service. In Sivasagar too, the chaka bandh had its affects as a number of private and public transportation was off the roads along with other commercial establishments.

Roads in Guwahati were mostly empty till noon, with all the government vehicles being off the roads today as the motor organisations of Assam extended their support to the bandh.

In Guwahati, the private buses have wholeheartedly supported the Chaka Bandh. However, thje government run  Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses provided their services, although the vehicles are bearing an overburden of commuters.

The Chaka Bandh was called by the All India Motor Transport Organization as a mark of protest against the proposed Motor Vehicles (MV) Amendment Bill that was recently passed in the Lok Sabha and is awaiting affirmation in the Rajya Sabha.
