200 add’l Foreigners Tribunals in district HQs

To tackle the large number of cases that are likely to cropup in the post-publication phase of the NRC, the Assam government will set up200 Additional Foreigners Tribunals (FTs) in six district headquarters of Guwahati,Jorhat, Silchar, Nagaon, Bongaigaon, and Tezpur.

These 200 Additional Foreigners Tribunals will becomeoperational roughly one month after publication of the final NRC.

There will be one Member and at least 10 employees in eachFT.

The interview process for the Members of these FTs willcommence from July 15 while the results will be declared by August 20.

At present, 100 Foreigners' Tribunals are functioning in theState and after the publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), itis expected that the burden on the Tribunals would increase considerably.

That's why, the decision to set up 1,000 new Tribunals hasbeen taken and 200 will be set up in the first phase.

As per the Gauhati High Court advertisement, the qualifications required of a candidate for the post of Member are that he/she should be a citizen of India; a retired judicial officer of Assam Judicial Service or a retired civil servant (not below the rank of Secretary and Additional Secretary) having judicial experience or advocates not below the age of 35 years with at least seven years of practice.
