The central government is unlikely to push for the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) during the ongoing Budget session of Parliament.
As per reports, the Bill is not listed for re-introduction, though several Bills that lapsed during the previous Narendra Modi government are proposed to be re-introduced along with several ordinances.
The Citizenship Bill lapsed on February 13 in the Rajya Sabha, when the government faced stiff opposition from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and NEDA allies in North Eastern region.
Earlier, the ruling government faced massive trouble from various Political, Non-political forces in the north-eastern states and even its Bihar ally JD(U) announcing that it will vote against the proposed legislation.
The bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955, to grant Indian nationality to people belonging to minority communities — Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians — in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan after six years of residence in India instead of 12, even if they don't possess any proper document.
