North Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha on Tuesday demanded a CBI probe into the illegal coal mining in the state. "The Supreme Court orders ban on coal mining in Meghalaya and permitted mining only in some coal mine but the mining is being carried out in all the mining sites," alleged Purkayastha while addressing a press conference today.
Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha alleged that 40-50 tonnes of coal are being supplied on every day basis and these coal carrying trucks are being passed in front of 7-8 SPs still no actions are being taken against the illegal miners.
He further stated that five labourers from Assam have been trapped in a coal mining site in Meghalaya but the bodies have not yet recovered.
Purkayastha also alleged that the police do not seize the vehicles from the coal mining site because they are fully connected with the miners. He also claimed that the BJP MLAs are involved in the illegal coal smuggling in Karimganj, and Sutarkandi and they collect Rs. 500 from each vehicle.
"A BJP MLA also started coal syndicate in Barak Valley. I urged Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to stop coal syndicate and to take action against illegal smuggling of coal," Purkayastha added.
