Botswana may kill some of their extra elephants and use them as pet foods. This has been reflected by an inter-ministerial report.
The report by cabinet ministers has recommended lifting a four-year hunting ban and the introduction of elephant culling. Botswana has 1,32,000 elephants, much more than the ecosystem of the country can handle.
After months of public meetings and consultations, the report by ministers recommends the "establishment of elephant meat canning" for pet food.
But others say the country's tourism has grown dramatically since the ban came into place and that lifting it would affect the country's international reputation for conservation.
