Prime Minister Narendra Modi was lauded by Bollywood actors and producers for the reduction of GST rates on movie tickets after the 31st Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council meeting.
The reduction was announced by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, drawing praises from the Hindi film fraternity.GST on cinema tickets costing up to Rs 100 has been brought down to 12% from 18%, while tickets costing more than Rs 100 will now attract a GST of 18% from earlier 28%. The new GST rates will be effective from January 1, 2019.
Taking to Twitter, director Karan Johar, actors Anupam Kher, Ajay Devgn and film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh praised the Prime Minister for the decision.

Ajay Devgn: The voice of the film industry was finally heard and immediate action taken, thanks to @narendramodi ji. For movie tickets priced below Rs. 100 the tax has been reduced from 18% to 12% now and for tickets priced above Rs. 100 the tax has been reduced from 28% to 18% now.

Earlier, during PM Modi's Mumbai visit, a delegation from the film and entertainment fraternity, including Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, Rakesh Roshan, Karan Johar, Siddhartha Roy Kapur and Prasoon Joshi, asked for a lower and uniform GST rates for the industry.
