An FIR has been registered against Garga Chatterjee, Kolkata-based commentator on South Asian politics and culture for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Chaolung Sukaphaa (Siu-Ka-Pha) the first Ahom king in medieval Assam, was the founder of the Ahom kingdom.
The FIR was registered at Dibrugarh Police Station. In a series of tweets, Chatterjee called the great Ahom king as Chinese invader and questioned Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for celebrating 'Asom Divas' which is in commemoration of Chaolung Sukapha. However, Chatterjee later deleted the tweets.
The FIR was filed by Bhaskar Gogoi, a resident of Dibrugarh demanded strict punishment against him.
Garga Chatterjee conspiringly accused Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal for celebrating Asom Day (Assam's state day) which is in commemoration of Swargadeu Sukapha. In that tweet, he maligned Bharatiya Janata Party, Assam Pradesh, and tried to link with banned organisation ULFA, Bhaskar said.
In another tweet on same day at 9:19 PM, Garga Chatterjee again maligned Swargadeu Sukapha and his progenies. He indirectly targeted Ahom community as well as greater Assamese society with blatant accusation of being Chinese invaders. These tweets coming in the wake of tense border standoff in Ladakh and general antagonism against Chinese government at large, might lead to targeting of Assamese people in rest of India. Given that Garga Chatterjee has a verified Twitter account, this kind of nefarious misinformation and malignation will put entire Assamese community at risk, Bhaskar added.
