A fire broke out inside a showroom in Lajpat Nagar Central Market of South Delhi on Saturday. More than 70 firefighters have been deployed at the spot immediately to douse the fire.
As per officials, they received a call from I-block in Central Market around 10.20 am following which 30 fire tenders and several ambulances were rushed to the spot.
"The fire spread from the showroom to other areas and we are trying to control it. No casualties have been reported so far," said Delhi Fire Services Chief, Atul Garg.
As per statements made by officials, the fire was doused by 2.20 pm and presently cooling operations are underway. Initially, the fire department had sent 30 tenders with more than 100 personnel given the spread of fire. More than five tenders are involved in the cooling process, post 2.30 pm.
According to locals and fire officials, the fire engulfed three buildings and six blocks. Since majority shops were of cloth and garments, the fire quickly escalated towards adjacent plots. The smoke billowing from the buildings was seen from at least 200 metres. With the temperatures exceeding 36 degrees, the firefighting operations have been particularly difficult.
as per sources, a barricade was placed in the middle of the Central Market nearly 50 metres from the burnt shops. The shops within 10 metres vicinity have not been allowed to open.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted earlier, "Fire trucks have reached the spot, rescue and relief operations are underway. I am continuously monitoring the situation and am in touch with Delhi Fire Department officials."
