Amid the raging second wave of Covid-19 pandemic, a Twitter storm broke out on Sunday where thousands of Tweeple comprising mainly students have demanded the cancellation of Class 10 conducted under State Education Board of Assam (SEBA) and 12 board exams held under Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council (AHSEC).
As of Sunday evening, the Twitter storm on #CancelAssamBoardExams led to over 1.2 million tweets.
While several states have cancelled or deferred the state board examinations, Assam is yet to take a final call on whether examinations will be held.
So far, at least eleven states have cancelled their examinations which include, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, while, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Kerala have conducted their respective board examinations.
Distressed students have been sharing their thoughts over the exam dilemma through social media posts, however, their role as keyboard warriors demanding cancellation of exams could be observed prominently after the CBSE 12 exams were scrapped on June 1.
In last five days there have been protests on Twitter and other micro blogging sites in connection to the cancellation of exams and to include history of Northeastern states in the syllabus of CBSE and other boards.
As per reports and based on the analysis of several hundreds of comments, students are undergoing mental turmoil due to the suspense and the delay regarding the board exams.
In connection to the examinations, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured that a decision on the 12th board exams will be taken after CBSE announces evaluation criteria for assessing the students. He welcomed the decision taken by Prime Minister to cancel the CBSE Class 12 exams, but, added that the state would wait till the CBSE announces the modalities for marking the students.
Meanwhile, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Saturday said that the HSLC and HS exam will be held after the COVID situation improves in the state. While addressing the media over HSLC and HS examination barb, the minister told that if COVID-19 cases reduce by 1%, the examination will be conducted.
He further added, "Canceling examination will not solve the ongoing issue. Rather it will be conducted keeping a view to the future of the student".
"CBSE has cancelled the examination, we will not cancel. HSLC and HS examinations are important for student's future," added the Education Minister.
Earlier this year, the HSLC and HS examinations were scheduled to begin on May 11 but were postponed due to the prevailing Covid situation of the state.
