An accused in Assam's kidney trafficking case was apprehended in Tamil Nadu three days ago and was brought back to the state yesterday. The accused, indentified as Plaban Borthakur, was found near Coimbatore.
A local court has reportedly sent him to six days of police custody. Borthakur, who had been missing for four months, was caught near Coimbatore, around 500 kms from Chennai, officials said.
The culprit, who was apprehended three days ago, was taken to the Jagiroad police station on Tuesday. Officials informed that a complaint had already been filed against him.
Notably, Assam Police had unearthed an illegal kidney trafficking racket. People in need of money would be convinced into selling their kidney in exchange for cash, and only part of the promised money would be paid. The first victims of the racket were identified in Morigaon. Subsequently, complaints began to emerge from other parts of the state, in several of which, Borthakur's name came up.
Assam Police contested the interim bail granted to him by the Gauhati High Court, but were denied due to insufficient evidence. The accused, Borthakur, went into hiding by then. Reportedly, four of the five people arrested in this case, have been released on bail.
