Sri Lanka bans burqa after blasts

Pratidin Bureau

Following the deadly Easter bombings, Sri Lanka has completely banned all face veils including the burqa. Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has approved the decision on Sunday.

"President Maithripala Sirisena took this decision to further support the ongoing security and help the armed forces to easily identify the identity of any wanted perpetrators," a press release stated. The decision was taken after a private members' motion was submitted by a parliamentarian in the country the seeking the ban.

With this rule in place, no woman is able to leave their home with their face hidden behind a veil without running the risk of a fine.
