Names of family members of Declared Foreigners not to be included in NRC

Pratidin Bureau

The Gauhati High Court has made it clear that names of brothers, sisters and family members of those declared as foreigners by the Foreigner Tribunals (FT) will not be included in the list of NRC.

In this context, a person named Ajijul Haque, whose brother Ainul Haque is a Declared Foreigner, had registered a complaint against Prateek Hajela's orders of non-inclusion of family members of DFs at the Gauhati High Court, which had been rejected by the court on Friday.

Hence, until their Indian citizenship is proved, name of family members of Declared Foreigners will not be included in NRC like that of the d-voters.

In an order issued by the NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela, Deputy Commissioners of all districts and DRCs had been directed not to include names of brothers, sisters and family members of Declared Foreigners (DF) in the FT.

The order issued by Hajela had stirred quite a lot of controversy on the political platform. Several organisations such as AIUDF had come out in strict opposition of the order.

But the court, dismissing everything, has said that without proving one's Indian citizenship, one's name will not be included in the list.

There are around two lakh registered complaints in FTs of various districts of Assam and as such names of these people will also not be included in the list.
