Assam Congress demands special session of Assembly on Citizenship Amendment Bill

Pratidin Bureau

With numerous protests staged against the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 across the state, Assam Congress has demanded a special Assembly session on the Bill.

Leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia, along with a delegation of seven members, called on speaker HN Goswami and urged him to conduct a special session. AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam too met the speaker and asked for a special session.

Saikia said "The Citizenship Amendment Bill is a threat to the Assamese society as it goes against the Assam Accord, 1985. People of Assam has understood that now".

AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam has said that they have also demanded for a special Assembly session on the Bill. "Congress too have demanded a special session. However, the speaker has said that all MLAs of Assam are not of the same opinion regarding the matter" he added.

It may be mentioned here that not only AIUDF and Congress, BJP's ally AGP has also asked for a special session on the Bill.
