Violence erupts during BJYM protest in Kolkata

The BharatiyaJanata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of BJP on Wednesday organised amassive protest against Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government's decisionto hike electricity tariff in the State. The BJYM also alleged corruption in meterreading.

During the protest, violence erupted in the Central Avenue area, when hundreds of protesters rallied towards the headquarters of Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation. However, the Kolkata Police stopped the protesters near Chandni Chowk metro station. Police also used water cannons and tear gas to control the protesters.

Many BJYMworkers sustained injuries and were taken to the nearby hospital. Meanwhile, someof the workers were arrested by the police. According to State BJP, 85 workersincluding some State-level leaders were detained by the Police.
