Former Tamil Nadu CM M Karunanidhi passes away

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) President Muthuvel Karunanidhi today breathed his last at the Kauvery hospital at 6.10 PM.

The veteran was 94 years old when he passed away following a 11-day long battle with illness.

Karunanidhi was admitted to the hospital on July 28 after he contracted urinary tract infection and developed a high fever.

"With deep anguish we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar M Karunanidhi on 07.08.2018 at 6.10 pm.

Despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond.

"We profoundly mourn the loss of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide," a press release by Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director of Kauvery Hospital, said.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Congress President Rahul Gandhi visited him in the hospital over the week. Karunanidhi's wife Dayalu Ammal also visited the hospital on Monday.

Thousands of Kalaigar's supporters are mourning outside the hospital and condolences have started pouring in for the veteran leader.
