Abhinandan ready to fly again!

Pratidin Bureau

Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was captured by Pakistan and then released, is fit to fly again. The Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot has cleared all his medical tests and is ready to soar in the sky.

35-year-old Abhinandan Varthaman had parachuted across the LoC on February 27 after a dogfight with Pakistani F-16 jets. The Pakistan Army had held him captive and had handed him to India on March 1 in a "goodwill gesture".

After his return, he had gone back to his squadron in Srinagar although he was then on a four-week sick leave. His medical examination had revealed a rib injury due to the assault by the locals in PoK. A MRI scan on the IAF pilot showed that he also suffered a lower spine injury after ejecting from his MiG-21 plane.

The medical tests had also ruled out any implants by Pakistan Army on his body. Wing Commander Abhinandna then underwent a series of tests over the next month-and-a-half to decide if he can fly a fighter jet again.

Wing Commander Varthaman had denied physical torture by Pakistani authorities. He had instead complained of "mental harassment".
