Today, the 15th of June, marks the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The day is observed every year to raise awareness against the abuse and suffering inflicted on elderly people.
Elder abuse not only refers to physical abuse but can also be inflicted in the form of psychological or emotional and financial abuse.
United Nations General Assembly recognised it in December 2011 post a request made by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse.
According to the UN, around 1 in 6 older people experience some form of abuse. It is predicted to rise as populations age worldwide.
