Two persons sent to detention camp

Pratidin Bureau

Two people have been sent to a detention centre at Jorhat on Friday by a tribunal on suspicion of being a 'foreigner'.

Sabitri Dey, Bijoy Bhushan Das, resident of Silonijan Revenue Circle, were detained after they failed to prove their legacy data dates back to 1952.

Families of both claimed that they have documents to prove their legacy.

Sabitri Dey and Bijoy Bhushan are among the 40 lakh people whose names were not included in the complete draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), published last year.

The register, with a cut-off date of March 24, 1971, aims to separate "genuine" citizens from "illegal" immigrants.
