Seven Rohingya’s to be Deported from Assam today

Pratidin Bureau

Seven Rohingya's are to be deported in the first batch on Thursday who are held at a detention centre in Cachar District  Assam. Refusing to stop the deportation of Rohingya's the SC said,  "We are not inclined to interfere on the decision taken".

The Rohingya's, being a minority in Myanmar had to face a lot of violence. They were detained for illegally entering into India. They were bussed to the border yesterday to be deported.

Tushar Mehta, government lawyer told the court that the embassy of Myanmar was ready to give a certificate of identity to the Rohingya's.

The courts move was argued by lawyer Prashant Bhushan and said it was against the UN charter.

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi asked, "First of all, they have been recognised as Myanmar citizens. What you have to say?"

Prashant Bhushan argued that Myanmar have not yet recognised and are not ready to accepted the Rohingya's.

Dismissing the petition, CJI Ranjan Gogoi said,"You need not remind us what's our responsibility".

The UN has criticized New Delhi's move, and said  the forcible return violates international law.

UN Special Rapporteur on racism, Tendayi Achiume, said in a statement, "The Indian Government has an international legal obligation to fully acknowledge the institutionalised discrimination, persecution, hate and gross human rights violations these people have faced in their country of origin and provide them the necessary protection".

Around 40,000 Rohingya live in India after having fled persecution in Myanmar over the years. Around 16,000 of them are registered with the UN refugee agency.
