SC to hear plea seeking NRC re-verification

TheSupreme Court will hear a plea seeking 'purification' of the recently publishedNational Register of Citizens (NRC) on Friday. Abhijeet Sarma-led Assam PublicWorks (APW) had sought re-verification of the list of citizens.

"We have been saying that there are names of a large number of foreigners in the NRC," said Sarma.

Onthe other hand, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has also filed a petitionat the apex court seeking a thorough modification of the NRC to pass over theerrors. AASU claimed that a number of genuine Indians especially the indigenouspeople have left out from the list.

Itmay be mentioned here that the final NRC, which was published on August 31, hasexcluded around 19 lakh people.
