Saraighat Bridge to remain shut today

The Saraighat Bridge over the mighty Brahmaputra will remain closed today due to its inspection. The inspection will what and how many repairs are to be made to bridge.

The historic bridge, which is being maintained by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), had developed cracks at several places.  NFR, after the inspection, will ask permission from the state government to shut down the bridge for repairs. When granted, the bridge will likely remain shut for three months.

According to reports, there are chances of repair at 80 places on the bridge.

The traffic will be diverted to the new Saraighat bridge which is expected create a lot jam in the area. Traffic police have installed dividers on the bridge to control vehicles overtaking other vehicles and add to existing chaos.

Movement of heavy vehicles in the daytime will also remain prohibited.
