Protest at Jagun; family of Dinanath Upadhyay offer prayers to Paresh Baruah

Pratidin Bureau

Villagers of Udaypur have taken to the streets at Jagun demanding the release of Dinanath Upadhyay, also known as Gopal, on Tuesday.

National Highway no. 153 has been blocked from five in the morning due to the protest.

Interestingly, family members of Upadhyay have been offering prayers to ULFA (I) Chief Paresh Baruah's portrait, requesting the latter to release the former.

On the other hand, it may be noted that, Baruah had demanded a ransom of Rs 3 crore 50 lakhs for the release of Upadhyay and Tuesday had been stamped as the last day for the family to pay the amount to the ULFA chief.

Upadhyay who is an employee of a tea garden, had been kidnapped from Phaneng on June 08. After the incident ULFA (I) had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and had asked the family to pay the aforementioned amount for his release. The militant outfit had slated June 19 as the deadline to make the payment.
