Plastic-Free Aizawl On The Cards

Pratidin Bureau

The Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) aims to make the city plastic free by August 2019.

AMC mayor PC Lalhmingthanga informed that bye-law banning the use of single-use polythene bags and other plastics products of below 50 micron has already been framed and is now waiting for the Mizoram government's approval.

"The bye-law will come into effect from August 1, 2019 and will be enforced in stricter manner from October 2," PC Lalhmingthanga informed.

Lalhmingthanga further added that plastic products allowed by Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 and which are recyclable, however, will not be banned.

It may be mentioned here that the AMC in 2016-17 studied the status and environmental damage of plastics and had asked all Churches to use steel plates instead of thermo-plastic plates during festive seasons.

Aizawl presently has 67,594 households and the total volume of waste generated per day is estimated to be around 159.80 metric tonnes.
