New FTs To Be Operational From October

To tackle the large number of cases that are likely to crop up in the post-publication phase of the NRC, the Government of Assam is planning to make the new Foreigners' Tribunals operational from October 1.

The appointments of the membersand other staff are scheduled to start within the next few days.

At present, 100 Foreigners'Tribunals are functioning in the State and after the publication of theNational Register of Citizens (NRC), it is expected that the burden on theTribunals would increase considerably.

More than 2000 persons appliedfor the posts of members of the Tribunals and the Gauhati High Court selected221 of them. Though 200 new Tribunals would be set up, 221 persons wereselected as posts of members in some existing Tribunals were also vacant. Theselection process of 1800 staff for the new Tribunals has also been completedand they would also be appointed shortly.
