NESO Launches ‘Raj Bhawan Chalo’ Protest Against CAB

Pratidin Bureau

The North East Students' Organization (NESO) haslaunched a protest across the Northeastern region against the CitizenshipAmendment Bill (CAB) on Monday by taking out a protest march to Raj Bhawan inall the districts.

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU), which is a major constituent of NESO and other seven member organizations, has also started the protest march from Swahid Nyas in Uzanbazaar to Raj Bhawan in solidarity with NESO.

Thousands of AASU members including its Adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya, President Dipanka Nath, and General Secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi have participated in the protest march.

The protestors will submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister against the bill through the Governor of each state, which is strictly against the indigenous people of the region.

The NESO members said that North East is not a dustbin of illegal Bangladeshi people. Under no circumstances, the CAB will be accepted. "Our protest against the anti-indigenous CAB will continue," the NESO members said.

The BJP is bringing in the CAB only to garner votes ofthe illegal Bangladeshis and the ruling party is going ahead with the decisionon the CAB on the back of their numbers in Parliament, it alleged.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill had been passed inLok Sabha on January 8 but lapsed later as it could not be placed in RajyaSabha.

The CAB seeks to grant citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan after six years of stay in the country even if they do not possess proper documents.
